Best free "first-person shooter" games

GAME GENRE – First-person shooters, usually abbreviated as FPS, are action games played through the eyes of the protagonist, putting the player directly in the middle of the action. Shooting is generally the main form of combat, with players using a variety of weapons to fight enemies, complete objectives, and make their way through increasingly challenging levels. Single-player FPS games often combine combat with exploration, puzzles, and a storyline, while multiplayer games can focus almost entirely on fast-paced competition between players. Arena shooters in particular strip things down to the essentials: pick up weapons, find your opponents, and try not to be the one getting shot.
