Ultima Online
Ultima Online is one of the pioneering massively multiplayer online RPGs, creating a persistent fantasy world where thousands of players could explore, fight, trade, craft, socialize, and generally make life much more complicated for one another. Instead of following a rigid class system, characters could develop a broad range of skills, allowing players to create unusual combinations and specialize in everything from combat to crafting. The world is largely player-driven, with economies, guilds, housing, and conflicts developing through the actions of its community. Ultima Online became famous for giving players an unusual amount of freedom, including the freedom to discover that other players can be considerably more dangerous than monsters. Its influence on MMORPG design can still be seen decades after its original release.
