Runescape

Runescape is one of the defining names in browser MMORPG history, offering a huge persistent fantasy world where players can fight monsters, complete quests, trade, explore and develop a wide range of skills. Rather than forcing everyone into a single traditional RPG role, the game allows characters to pursue different interests, from combat and magic to gathering, crafting and various economic activities. Its browser-based origins gave it an enormous audience and helped demonstrate that a substantial online RPG did not necessarily require a boxed game or a powerful PC. The world has evolved considerably over the years, but the basic appeal remains familiar: create a character, find something interesting to do and gradually become more powerful. Just be careful; 'five more minutes' is a notoriously unreliable estimate.
