The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall
The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall is an enormous open-world RPG that greatly expands the ideas introduced by Arena, offering a vast region of Tamriel filled with cities, wilderness, dungeons, factions and quests. Players create highly customizable characters, develop skills, join organizations and explore a world designed to provide enormous freedom. The game's procedural generation allows it to contain an astonishing amount of content, including countless locations and quests, although the sheer scale can occasionally make navigation an adventure in itself. Daggerfall is especially notable for its depth of character customization and ambitious open-world design, making it a landmark in computer RPG history. It is also proof that 'open world' once meant something slightly terrifying: there were enormous distances to travel, and absolutely nobody had invented fast travel anxiety yet.
“Daggerfall featured a massive true 3D world the size of Great Britain, and helped usher in a gaming renaissance in 1996. The full version of Daggerfall is available for download and playable through a DOS emulator.” - Bethesda Softworks
