Hack

Hack is one of the foundational ancestors of the dungeon-crawling roguelike, born in an era when a fantasy adventure could fit comfortably inside a terminal window. Descending through procedurally generated dungeon levels, players battle monsters, collect equipment, manage resources and, naturally, try very hard not to die. Death is permanent, so every reckless decision can turn a promising expedition into a tiny ASCII obituary. Its interface may look prehistoric today, but the ideas behind it proved remarkably durable and influenced countless later roguelikes. There is no cinematic spectacle here, just exploration, danger and the eternal hope that the next corridor contains treasure rather than something with teeth.
