Exile III: Ruined World

Exile III: Ruined World is the 1996 conclusion to Spiderweb Software's original Exile trilogy, expanding the series with another enormous turn-based RPG adventure. Players explore a detailed fantasy world, recruit characters, complete quests, fight enemies, manage equipment, and become involved in the political and military struggles shaping the setting. The game is particularly notable for its emphasis on freedom: there are multiple ways to approach problems, and the world often feels like it exists independently of the player. Its presentation may look humble by modern standards, but the sheer quantity of content is impressive. It is the sort of RPG where “I'll finish this quest quickly” can be followed by several hours of completely unintended exploration.
