TORCS
open source (?)
TORCS, short for The Open Racing Car Simulator, is an open-source racing simulator aimed at players who want more than simply steering a car around a track. It features a selection of cars, circuits, racing modes, and physics-based driving, with an emphasis on vehicle behavior and competition rather than arcade-style explosions. The project has been developed over many years, giving it a distinctly community-driven character and plenty of room for customization. You can race against computer-controlled opponents or experiment with different cars and setups while attempting to keep all four wheels pointed roughly in the correct direction. It may not have the glossy presentation of commercial racing giants, but TORCS offers a surprisingly serious driving experience without requiring a garage full of expensive hardware.
“TORCS is a highly portable multi platform car racing simulation. It is used as ordinary car racing game, as AI racing game and as research platform.” - TORCS Team
