Introduced in 1983, the MSX was an ambitious attempt to bring some order to the increasingly chaotic home-computer market. Developed by Microsoft Japan and ASCII Corporation, the standard defined common hardware and software specifications so computers from different manufacturers could share programs and peripherals. Built around the Zilog Z80 processor, MSX machines offered capable graphics and sound for their era and became particularly popular in Japan, Europe, and parts of South America. The platform also became an important home for games, with Konami, Hudson Soft, and other developers releasing titles that would influence later generations of Japanese gaming.
