Savage: The Battle for Newerth
Savage: The Battle for Newerth mixes real-time strategy with first-person and third-person combat, creating a multiplayer game where different players can approach the same battle from completely different perspectives. One player can act as commander, building structures, managing resources and issuing orders, while others fight directly on the battlefield as individual soldiers. This combination makes teamwork particularly important, since successful attacks depend on both strategic planning and competent fighters. The setting pits opposing factions against one another in a science-fiction fantasy world, providing plenty of room for large battles and chaotic encounters. Savage was an ambitious experiment in genre blending, and its unusual structure remains its most interesting feature. It is RTS strategy for the player who occasionally feels the irresistible need to personally hit something.
“Savage: The Battle for Newerth was originally released by S2 Games in September 2003 and eventually became freeware 3 years later in September 2006, when the game has been officially abandoned and made open source. The last official patch (2.0e) came out in January 2004. Since then Savage: The Battle for Newerth has been continuously improved by the Savage community.” - S2 Games
