Grid Shock is a small arcade-style game from TeknoPants built around quick reactions and an abstract visual presentation. Rather than relying on a complicated story or a gigantic collection of mechanics, it focuses on the immediate satisfaction of understanding a system and trying to master it. The simple appearance can be deceptive, because games of this kind often become surprisingly demanding once the pace increases. Its compact design makes it suitable for short sessions, although “just one more attempt” has a tendency to become a rather longer commitment. TeknoPants has produced several unusual small games, and Grid Shock fits nicely into that tradition. It is obscure, straightforward and pleasantly experimental, exactly the sort of little freeware curiosity that can be fun to discover years after its original release.
