Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
open source (?)
Kevin Granade’s Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead (2013) is the post-apocalyptic buffet of your nightmares. Zombies, mutants, killer robots, eldritch horrors—you name it, the end of the world threw it at you. With its ASCII visuals and near-infinite systems, the game is less about scripted survival and more about improvisation. Want to turn a shopping cart into a weaponized death machine? Go ahead. Fancy living in the woods and surviving off squirrel meat? Totally valid. The sheer freedom is overwhelming, but also exhilarating, because in this world every small decision might be the one that keeps you alive another day—or gets you spectacularly eaten.

“Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a roguelike set in a post-apocalyptic world. Surviving is difficult: you have been thrown, ill-equipped, into a landscape now riddled with monstrosities of which flesh eating zombies are neither the strangest nor the deadliest.” - Kevin Granade
