Best free "world wars" games

GAME SETTING – Muddy trenches, tanks grinding through ruined towns, dogfights filling smoky skies, and soldiers creeping behind enemy lines—World War settings have given video games plenty of material to work with. Free games are no exception. Indie and freeware developers have explored both World War I and World War II through strategy games, tactical simulations, action titles, flight games, and historical adventures. Some put you directly on the battlefield, while others place you in the command room, where moving a few units on a map can have consequences far beyond the size of the screen. Expect military operations, historical campaigns, fictional scenarios, and the occasional alternate-history twist. These games can focus on grand strategy or individual missions, but they all draw from conflicts that reshaped the modern world. In other words, there's usually much more at stake than winning the next round.
