Best free "visual novel" games

GAME GENRE – Visual novels are games where the story takes center stage and traditional gameplay takes a comfortable seat in the back. Players typically read dialogue, follow character-driven stories, examine beautifully illustrated scenes, and make choices that can influence how the narrative unfolds. Those decisions may lead to different events, relationships, story branches, and multiple endings, meaning that one innocent-looking conversation can occasionally have surprisingly serious consequences. Many visual novels use anime-inspired artwork, but the genre is far more varied than that, covering everything from romance and comedy to mystery, horror, science fiction, and serious drama. Some include puzzles or other gameplay elements, while others are almost entirely focused on reading and making decisions. If you enjoy stories where you occasionally get to decide what happens next, visual novels are basically interactive fiction with pictures—and sometimes a truly alarming number of dialogue boxes.
