Crime Fighter
Crime Fighter is an obscure title from Peter Steffen that puts the player in the familiar role of someone attempting to combat criminal activity, although the presentation is considerably more modest than the phrase “crime fighter” might suggest. Like many independent games from the early 1990s, it is interesting partly because of its ambition: small-scale developers were constantly experimenting with ways to turn familiar movie and comic-book ideas into interactive experiences. The dated technology can make it feel quaint today, but that is precisely what makes obscure releases from this period fascinating. Crime Fighter is a snapshot of an era when creating a game at home was becoming increasingly realistic, even if the finished result occasionally looked like it had been assembled after dinner.
“In contrast to many other games and unlike the name of the game announces, you don't fight against crimes, but you try to commit as many of them as possible. For example you can play pickpocket, raid supermarkets and hotels, steal cars, raid banks, attack mail trains, and so on. Since you are in a big town you have many different opportunities for this.” - Peter Steffen
